RUNNING / MARATHONS

Completing a full marathon is indeed one of the greatest achievements that more people than you would realise aspire to.

Preparation for an event of this magnitude should never be under- emphasised.

The average person will take at least 4+ hours to complete their first marathon. The pounding that the body takes during this period must be well prepared for.

If you have never run before, we would recomend that you start with a shorter distance first, such as a 5km, then a 10km, progressing to a half marathon and then the big one.

The correct trainers are also important. If you are tall, you will need a certain brand to take the extra weight. The correct trainer for your foot shape is also of critical importance as this will have a bearing on your knee and hip alignment.

WHAT ABOUT THE TRAINING

If you are not a regular runner, you should allow a minimum of nine months to a full year to reach the level required to complete a full marathon.

Too often people decide to enter a marathon and do not prepare adequately. Training for a marathon uses a carefully controlled progression of distance and intensity. Rushing these progressions almost always ends in injury leading up to the race or on the race day itself.

One of the most common injuries experienced during rushed training is shin the splint. Shin splints occur when the body has not had enough time to adapt to the work load and pounding from marathon training. The shin muscle starts to develop tiny tears where it attaches to the shin bone. Shin splints are very painful and will almost certainly put a stop to your training as the only thing that cures them is a reduction in activity levels. Furthermore they take a long time to heal, so hey presto..... just like that! an abrupt end to your marathon dreams.

It is wise to prepare for this event correctly and avoid all of the unnescessary pitfalls and dissapointment right from the start.

I have trained clients to run 5km fun races, 10km races etc and even raced with them for support on the big day.

The ecstatic look on their faces when they reach the finish line is well worth every single one of the moans and groans along the way, (that of course would be the client complaining, not me!)

Give us a call and we will start preparing you for your first 5km, 10km, Half Marathon or Full Marathon Race.
